I managed to get tvtwm and vtwm and fvwm. The following is a small summary of my results: tvtwm: needs xpm from ftp.x.org and is OK but has some mysterious bugs like a new xterm will somehow drop you into vi with the same file as you were editing in the previous xterm: very strange !!. There also seem to be numerous version of this src so if at first you dont succeed: get another source. Biggest drawback is NO AUTOPAN vtwm: really wantd this because it has the "autopan" feature i.e. move the mouse to the edge of the screen and it automatically pans the virtual screen. But no matter what I tried could not get this to work. It compiled and ran but no windows at all showed only the X background. fvwm: could not get this up either but didn't try really hard.
