Maybe I should qualify my glowing recommendation of iijppp. I run one machine (no network), at home, with the only incoming connects being an occasional uucp. Thus, no particularly heavy loads that might cause problems (as alluded to in another post by Andrew Gordon). Anyone with a similar situation would probably find iijppp satisfactory. : >My only problem with demand dialing was sendmail. I did not want to disable the DNS altogether; I wanted it used just on outgoing mail for the internet, thus avoiding the goofy stuff rmail can do to your address. (A listserv replied to my subscription message and showed my address as "tarush.chattanooga.net!tom@caladan.chattanooga.net"....) I wanted the DNS to be the last resort, used only _after_ the mailertable. Anyway, thanks for the tips. I'm happy with the smail setup; I know some find using smail rather than sendmail almost a sacrilege, but, as mentioned above, I don't put any heavy demands on anything, including my MTA. It was easy to get it to do _exactly_ what I wanted...and that's what counts, isn't it? -- Tom Rush tom@tarush.chattanooga.net
