Have a look at your /etc/gettytab and see if your std.38400 entry is
not mangled.  The "std.38400" in your ttys file is _not_ actually
refering to any particular speed, but rather to an entry in gettytab
instead.

I've once seen a mangled entry posted here (some spurious backslash
magic).
