I have a few questions about your setting of the system. 1. Can you contact the www.freebsd.org using the FreeBSD box. 2. Did you setup the server for your netscape (dos machine). If you haven't, try to get the correct name server (IP address) and try again. The trouble was (and is) that, although Netscape appeared to be working fine, I couldn't access 'www.freebsd.org' - which is rather annoying. It's particularly annoying because I can dial up, to the same connection that my FreeBSD host uses, with a DOS/WINDOWS machine running Chameleon, and have no trouble at all reaching the FreeBSD web pages. In fact that is what I do when I want to look something up. The responses I received at the time suggested the usual stuff about checking that I can ping the host, look at traceroute, etc. All of that worked fine. In fact, the symptoms are more subtle. I have no problem pinging the host 'www.freebsd.org' or 'freefall.cdrom.com' to give it its 'real' name. When I request the freebsd home page through Netscape, it gives the progress message 'Connect: Host contacted. Waiting for reply...' almost immediately. After that, nothing happens until a timeout when I get a popup telling me that the connection was reset by the remote host. I have spent some time investigating this problem. I have used SLIP and PPP connections (using both 'pppd' and 'ppp'). I have used 3 different web browsers (Netscape, Chimera and tkWWW) and the results are always identical. I have come to the conclusion that something deeper is going on here... In order to look more closely at this problem I have built the bpf device into my kernel, in order to run 'tcpdump'. Unfortunately, I know precious little about tcp/ip, and would appreciate help from a friendly network hacker who could tell me what's going on. Sorry to be so long winded, but this has been bugging me for 2 months now, and is the only blot in my experience of FreeBSD. Thanks, in advance, John -- "If I had all the money I've spent on drink, I'd spend it on drink." Sir Henry Rawlinson.
