Correct me if I'm wrong.  Free BSD Boot Manager is like Linux LILO is like 
EZ-Drive (DOS).  They write to first few sectors of HDD where BIOS first read.

BIOS Boot ->  BM --> [par 1]  [par 2]  [par 3] ...

You can probably trade BM for LILO or the other.  I've installed LILO over BM 
without problem,  or you can erase it by low-level reformating track 0 
(This is forbidden on some IDE harddisks, I believe) but you will most 
definitely lose your partitions too.
