I bet that root doesn't have any nfs mounted file systems in the path, while the regular users do. That s why root can log in and shut down the system. The hang after sendmail is a sure sign that the network is down. Either the 3c509 driver or maybe the network is going away for another reason (I have a 3c509 without problems). Maybe the network is just screwed up, and that is why it is a random number of reboots before it comes back. When it hangs like this see if the rest of the network is screwed up. Also power cycle the system to see if something needs to be kicked real hard. -- Peter Dufault Real Time Machine Control and Simulation HD Associates, Inc.
