Summary: After upgrade from FreeBSD 1.1.5.1 to 2.0.5 ftp xfers are VERY slow
Keywords: ftp tcp/ip ISDN slow 4.4BSD
X-Newsreader: NN version 6.5.0 #3

Hi,

after upgrading one of my machines from FreeBSD 1.1.5.1 (Net/2 based) to
FreeBSD 2.0.5 (4.4 BSD based) i observe a very strange phenomenon when doing
ftp over a 64Kbit link (IP router over ISDN) to an HP-UX machine running
HP-UX 9.04:

Under FreeBSD 1.1.5.1 i used to get continuous 7.5 Kb/sec ftp rate without
any problems in both directions.

Under FreeBSD 2.0.5 the ftp transfer starts (with the server being on the
HPUX machine) and then slows down until it looks like being halted (but
succeeds after a looong time eventually).

In case i initiate the ftp transfer from the HP-UX machine (the ftp server
runs on the FreeBSD 2.0.5 machine), i get the normal full ftp speed.

Until now i tried to disable the "new" tcp-extensions (RFC1323 and RFC1644)
in FreeBSD 2.0.5 via sysctl, but that has not changed anything.

Telnet in both directions run as usual.

Has anyone an idea ?

hellmuth
