I am having a grand time with this "upgrade" from 2.0R to 2.0.5R :)

I WAS recently running FreeBSD 2.0R, along side of OS/2 Warp and DOS
6.22/Windows for Workgroups 3.11 on my 486DX/2-66.

I finally got my 2.0.5R CD :), and have finally had time to make the move to
2.0R. Having the utmost confidence in the team ;), I calmly proceed to blow
away my 2.0 area (having noted/backed-up my little mods here and there). Since
I was also going to make some hardware additions to my system, I also blow
away the OS/2 area (again no big deal, seriously...I love doing system configs
in the wee hours of the morning...).

Here is a run-down of my system's setup:

  - Vega 486DX/2-66 Motherboard, 32MB RAM, 1 MB cache
  - Diamond Viper VLB 2MB video card (Weitek P9000)
  - Promise EIDE2300Plus VL EIDE disk/floppy controller - recent addition!
     -- TEAC Combo floppy 3.5/5.25 FD
     -- WD AC2340 327MB IDE HD - master
     -- WD AC31200 1.2GB EIDE HD - slave and 2nd recent addition
  - Adaptec 2842VL Bus-mastering SCSI controller (AIC-7770 based)
     -- Quantum 340MB SCSI-2 HD, id # 0
     -- Quantum 1.8GB Wide SCSI-2 HD, id # 1
     -- Colorado PowerTape 2GB Tape drive , id # 2 (Tandberg 4100 type)
  - Soundblaster 16 SCSI-2 soundcard/CD-ROM controller (AC 6240 based ?)
     -- Toshiba XM3401B 2x SCSI CD-ROM drive, id # 4

System bootup does detect all of the above (or seems to) without a problem. I
have gotten everything in DOS/WIN, and OS/2 to work or to be recognized since
I changed IDE controllers and added the EIDE HD. I have tried several installs
of FreeBSD along with OS/2 on the SCSI HDs (because I am limiting the IDE
drives to DOS/WIN only).

Ideally, I am trying to set up the BSD root on the 2nd SCSI HD (i.e. id # 1,
also the 4th HD in the system). This is partly because I can get most of my
BSD area onto 1 drive, and also because OS/2's FDISK isn't always happy
recognizing freespace and creating partitions on the 4th disk, although it
readily deletes partitions on this HD if requested.

The only step in the entire install/configure process that I have is if I run
X -probeonly in the XFree86 config. step. I can even (with patience and a
handy Enter key) get the package install to work all the way through (or so it
appears). When I quit the install process, the system reboots, I have no
problem choosing FreeBSD from OS/2's boot manager, and the system detects
everything correctly until the magic "changing root device to sdxa" segment
only to be followed up by "panic: cannot mount root..." :( The boot process
zips happily along to this point if I use (the default, in my case) sd3a or
sd0a. It hangs if I try sd1a (which I think I understand why, haven't tried
sd2).

This is how I am trying to slice up my 2 SCSI HDs:

 id # 0: 327MB
    - part. 1 --> 250MB OS/2 HPFS root
    - part. 2 --> 127MB FreeBSD swap

 id # 1: 1.8GB
    - part. 1 --> 653MB OS/2 HPFS data
    - part. 2 --> 250MB FreeBSD root
    - part. 3 --> 750MB FreeBSD /usr
    - part. 4 --> 64MB FreeBSD swap

Both FreeBSD and OS/2 install fine for the above setup. OS/2 works fine,
FreeBSD has the above panic problem. I have also tried this alternate setup
(which makes more sense to me, except that I don't readily get OS/2's FDISK to
setup up partitions in HD #4 and I can't get FreeBSD's version, or pfdisk for
that matter, to create OS/2 (type 7 if I'm not mistaken) slices from the CD
install routine):

 id # 0: 340MB
    - part. 1 --> 263MB FreeBSD root
    - part. 2 --> 64MB FreeBSD swap

 id # 1: 1.8GB
    - part. 1 --> 250MB OS/2 root
    - part. 2 --> 653MB OS/2 data
    - part. 3 --> 750MB FreeBSD /usr
    - part. 4 --> 64MB FreeBSD swap

Again, the same panic end result on this setup, except that instead of being
unable to mount sd3a, you can't mount sd0a. Then the syncing disks, auto
reboot in 15 secs. show comes on. Left unattended, this cycle just keeps going
and going and going...(I had noticed somebody in the group needed three
reboots to get started?!!!)

Anyway, I am reaching down to the bottom of the barrel for ideas, so I thought
I'd call on the pros. Any ideas/suggestions or questions please don't
hesitate to post or e-mail? Any knowledge learned (both FreeBSD config-wise or
sharing multiple platforms on a single machine) will be happily
shared/contributed. I really don't want to wait/hope for a 2.1R solution :)

Thanks in advance!
