This could be acted on in /etc/rc.i386, using lptcontrol, much as the vidcontrol calls are done now. I only found out about lptcontrol recently. The first large postscript file I have printed since starting to use FreeBSD was going at a snail's pace. I happened to find a post about this very problem while I was waiting for the print job to finish, and the reply with the solution (lptcontrol -p) saved me some time trying to figure out why. In addition, you might alter your sample printcap file to at least make the lp=/dev/lpt0 instead of /dev/lp . This might help avoid some of the "lpr doesn't work" posts (although I'm sure there will still be plenty). Just a thought.. -- Tom Rush tom@tarush.chattanooga.net
