Except in certain circumstances, such as restoring from tape onto an
empty filesystem.  Under SunOS, turning off synchronous metadata
writes can speed this up by a factor of 10, which is definitely
worthwhile!  And in this case, if the system crashes you just newfs
and start again, and it's still 5 times faster than it would have
been.
