I may be wrong here but as I understand Socks you have to "Socksify"
your clients to work throught the firewall. This process hasn't been
done to the ftp client on the freebsd boot disk. If this is wrong then
I have an old version of Socks and I would like to see the
configuration of your firewall/gateway because it's exactly what I
want to build for my ethernet at home.

I'm guessing that you told the FreeBSD install that it's DNS server
was the Linux box. How is the DNS set up on your linux box?
