It definitely IS compatible.

We are using this exact drive under BSDI 2.0 with excellent results.

IMO the problem is almost certainly not the drive or indeed BSDI - it is 
probably your SCSI controller.

We are using the Buslogic 946 PCI SCSI controller with Quantum Grand Prix, 
Toshiba 3601 CD-ROM drive and Conner Python 8GB DAT drives - works great!
I would suggest that you try another manufacturers SCSI controller first.
