In article <4045qr$sia@dingo.cc.uq.oz.au>,
ll@maths.uq.oz.au (Lawrence Lau) asked:
% Well . . . I have got a situation where a Sun user wants to access a color
% printer attached to a SGI machine. Unfortunately the SGI machines runs the
% SysV printing system (lpadmin,lp,lpstat, etc) whilst the Sun uses the BSD
% commands (/etc/printcap,lpc,lpr,etc). The question is there an easy way of
% sending print jobs across the network from the Sun to the SGI machine?

olchansk@a2.phy.bnl.gov (Konstantin Olchanski) replied:

_Essential System Administration_, published by O'Reilly and Associates,
has a good chapter on both SVR4 and BSD printing systems, and how to
make the two talk. You can create an lpd service for your printers on
SVR4, but the commands to do so are *very* non-obvious.

When I tried this using the Solaris 2.3 manuals, I discovered that the
typesetters of these manuals had conveniently "normalized" the ' and `
characters, ruining the command descriptions beyond belief!

>BTW, you should have asked your q on comp.sys.sgi.* newsgroups.

Probably, but he *was* looking for help on BSD-derived printing systems
as well. ;^)
