I had this issue under XAccel.. it's a syslog issue.. syslog is trying
to write to console the su entry and is being blocked by the X server
(a bug me thinks..).. it works for a while because syslog has some
buffers to prevent blocking.. but when they're full it just has to
hang..

Workaround: start up an xconsole as a place for the messages to go.
