Probably /usr/sbin is not in your path as a user, and you use `su'
instead of `su -l' to become superuser.

Set up /root/.profile (or whatever, depending on the shell you use)
to have a safe path (don't let "." in it, for example), umask, etc.
Then use `su -l' to become root.
