I'm very surprised it  didn't work. Our syslogd  is as standard as it could
be. Do you have example of line that didn't work ?

For any facility.level add two entries :

*.err;kern.debug;auth.notice;user.none		/dev/console
*.err;kern.debug;daemon,auth.notice;mail.crit;user.none	/var/adm/messages
