pppd is about all you need. It's included with the standard distribution.

The O'Reilly series of manuals, particularly the blue series (`Help
for Unix System Administrators') is by far the best place to start.
O'Reilly also sells a complete 4.4BSD manual set, though that's of
more limited utility.

After that, I recommend you start reading source code. Digging into
the source to solve problems is a lot of work, but it has a much
greater guarantee of positive results than any other method.
