Having installed ppp -auto ondemand pinging myself works fine, but ppp dials out and connects to my ISP before the 'pings' start to be returned. However there is no line traffic (according to the modems lights) for the actual ping packets. Before installing ppp I had tried the suggestions made. Changing the netmask made no difference and neither did altering /etc/host.conf so that it has the hosts line before the bind line. The /etc/hosts file has always had a line in it for beckley and beckley.demon.co.uk. However even ping 158.152.59.213 doesn't start working until the ppp link is up. I presume this is for a request for the 'name' for that numeric IP addr.
