I had to go into UserConfig (at boot, load /kernel -c) and DISABLE all the devices that you know you won't be using. Specifically, I think mcd0 and mcd1 were causing the problems, but I disabled everything else that I didn't need. Take special care to disable devices that are configured for the same addresses as your network card. Also remember that if you set up your IRQ/BASE IO address (etc) using software (in my case, EZSETUP), you might need to set the IRQ to your network card to -1 in UserConfig. You will find the HARDWARE file on ftp.freebsd.org /pub/FreeBSD/2.0.5-RELEASE/HARDWARE absolutely essential. It took me hours to finally get my network card recognized, it would have taken me much longer without the assistance of other FreeBSD users on irc channel #FreeBSD. Hope this helps - good luck! Rich : I think that my PC has problems to communicate using the LAN card : (INTERCOM 16CT, NE2000 compatible, 16 bits, jumperless), because it : gives timeout. I've already used hostname and IP addresses for the : servers. I've already tried to make some PINGs from other systems, : while PC is trying to access the FTP server, but the PC doesn't respond. : I can't understand why this happens, because the Ethernet card (ed1) is : detected on the boot phase.
