There are standards which state what these 'well-known ports' should be used for and you will confuse anything that assumes your system behaves in a standard way. Presumably telnet on port 25 fails now because there is something else that is expecting to find SMTP on the other end. On my (vanilla) system, telnet localhost 25 gives: (usual telnet banner) 220-jraynard.demon.co.uk Sendmail 8.6.11/8.6.9 ready at Tue, Aug 22 1995 23:26:34 GMT 220 ESMTP spoken here James -- "If English was good enough for Jesus Christ, it's good enough for me."
