I'm 100% sure the problem is not due to cabling, termination etc.,
since the DAT works well under windoze.

I've recently added a second adapter (an Adaptec 1542) to be used solely
by the DAT drive, and my kernel panic problems have disappeared,
confirming that there is some sort of problem with the Adaptec PCI driver.
However, I'm still getting an occaisional timeout on the console, and pax
prompts me for the "next device" whilst in the middle of a restore
(I hit 'y' and things seem to go OK).
