Posix defines something like a lowest common denominator.

You won't be very happy to restrict all your doing to that minimal
subset that is defined by Posix.

The actual importance of Posix is that implementors of an operating
system are well advised to adhere to everything that is mandated by
Posix (and look around to find the `most compatible' solution for
everything beyond this minimalistic standard).
