For info on Real Time Protocol (used in bat, nv, and a few other apps ), see Henning Schulzrinne, who is one of authors of the RTP Draft, home page : http://www.fokus.gmd.de/step/hgs/rtp/ Steve Passe <smp@csn.net> is making progress with his VM100 - a dumb card to interface your phone, modem, and soundcard. BAT I am still working on the next release of bat. bat is a net audio tool similar to vat. sound driver Stephen Hocking <sysseh@devetir.qld.gov.au> reported that the patch I sent out fixed his problem with the SB16 and his "SB16 Value Edition" now works. As to the patch if you need it just send me e-mail eventually all the patches will be rolled up into the next release of the sound driver. Alain Kalker <alain@Wit401402.student.utwente.nl> has volunteer to upgrade the existing sound driver to the latest version of the sound driver from Hannu (the author of the sound driver). Video Scene: I sent mail to Rod Grimes to see if he is willing to sell the Matrox Meteor video capture board. Mpeg Scene: The talk with Xing Technlogies has been postponed till they get more free time to be able to deal with the streamworks port to freebsd. Remote Control: Mind Path mailed me their protocol specs for their IR50. If anyone is interested just send me e-mail. Task List Volunteers to work on the sound driver. So far Alain Kalker <alain@Wit401402.student.utwente.nl> has step forward. Doc bits and images we need a volunteer to write up the multimedia scene on FreeBSD . We a need a Doc and an a cool HTML page. So far, "Fred Clark Jr." <fclark@cixs.org> has step forward and it will be nice if someone else can give him a hand since he is learning html... We need to check out the multimedia apps in the ports directory and make sure that they compile, install, and work: freebsd.cdrom.com:/pub/FreeBSD/ports-2.0.5/ audio gsm playmidi s3mod xcd maplay rplay sox xcdplayer gmod nas rsynth tracker xmcd package status who rplay works Steve Passe <smp@csn.net> xmcd not-working Steve Passe <smp@csn.net> rsynth works Steve Passe <smp@csn.net> fvwm works Steve Passe <smp@csn.net> nas build/install Steve Passe <smp@csn.net> playmidi note: --- Richard Toren <rpt@miles.sso.loral.com> said: I think I sorted this one out. The playmidi in the 2.0.5R packages is hardcoded to play to a GUS. Since that couldn't be identified, it said that no output device was configured. line 27 of playmidi.c: /* SET YOUR DEFAULT PLAYBACK DEVICE BY SETTING MASK OF CHANNELS TO PLAY */ int play_sb = 0, play_gus = 0ffff, play_ext = 0; I change it to: int play_sb = 0xffff, play_gus = 0, play_ext = 0; and the midi now plays. The other thing I noticed was that I was not giving it enough time to start up my midi file. The demo files are under 40k in size, while I was trying to play Bach's Brandenberg #1 which is 5.5Mb. It seems enuf space is malloced to hold the entire thing in memory. This takes 30 seconds to start playing. ---- graphics Mesa dore jpeg mpeg-lib mpeg_play netpbm pixmap povray tiff xanim xfig xli xpaint xpm xv net ivs nv vic tkWWW Perhaps the best way to accomplish this is to have an html page with comments about the app and a check button for a clean bill of health along with the e-mail of the certifier. Well folks, if you have a favorite multimedia please do try to fetch a fresh copy of the freebsd's ports directory and see if it builds and works. If the multimedia app does not work for you and you don't want to bother finding out what is wrong, just post to the multimedia list so someone else can look into it. Futures Game Have not heard much on Castle Wolfenstein port to FreeBSD. So I am wondering what is the major stumbling block if any? Demo See "PC Demos Explained" if you are interested in finding out what is a "demo", etc... http://www.mcs.net/~trixter/html/demos.html For your convenience, I uploaded 2reality.tar.gz, 2phobia.zip, clx_dope.zip to: rah.star-gate.com:/pub These are DOS "demos" which I hope will inspire people to write cool graphics for FreeBSD or contact the authors to see if they are willing to write something for FreeBSD. Remote Control Anyone out there has any experience with X10? Why? As we move forward to integrate devices into freebsd it becomes more necessary to control devices such as VCR, TV, Stereos, Phones, etc...
