Nobody outside Europe seems to consider QIC tape drives a good choice ... Tandberg Data drives are quite common with our customers and they're - cheaper than DAT, unless you need a lot of cartridges - more reliable - backwards compatible to QIC24 and QIC150 If you want to go for an SCSI tape drive I would strongly recommend thinking about QIC. They hold up to 5 GB (with compression, 2.5 without) nowadays and are simply rock solid. Personally I don't like helical scan tapes at all, because of greater tape wear and complicated (and therefore error-prone) mechanics. DAT was our standard offer for backing up Netware servers and we get a lot of worn drives back. Of course this is everyday use, and most of our customers don't care about cleaning, but ... QIC drives just continue to work for years. I got the 1GB model for my homebox for less than DM 1000,- and it really was plug and play. The cartridges are about twice as expensive as DAT tapes. The biggest drawback (IMHO) is, QIC cartridges don't fit in your pocket that well, and, if you have a lot to back up, there are no affordable auto-change drives, but that's beyond the needs of a home system. Just my personal opinion, I have no relation to Tandberg besides being a happy customer. Paddy -- Patrick M.
