I have similar problems (660MB disk, 1630 cyl, 15 hd, 53 sec), but with switching on translation on the wd1007 controller (16hd, 63sec) everything goes well! Also the geometry is now correct determined by sysinstall. You only have to check not to use more blocks of the hdisk than reported by the bootup message of the kernel!
