$ 1. Why does not <CTRL>+<Mouse button> give me a menu in xterm?

is your numlock on? turn it off.

$ 2. When startx is done by root, all the xterms start /usr/local/bin/tcsh,
$ but they start /bin/csh if X is brought up by other users. tcsh is
$ the login shell for everybody. If logged in normally, tcsh is what
$ 	everybody is getting.

no idea.

$ 3. $HOME/.xsession seems to be ignored by xinitrc, but that's, probably,
$ my misunderstanding of X in general (-:

xdm doesn't ignore it for me. i don't know about startx or xinit. have you
tried .xinitrc?
