Well, I am figuring out about how to get X going on FreeBSD -- by 
reading the Slackware manual for Linux!

My problem was:

(1) not having X's bin directory in the path and
(2) not have a .xinitrc file

I still haven't figured out where all the menus and applications are 
that were immediately made accessible under Linux, but at least it is 
working, and the screen looks clear and nice.
