I've once been using a 1684 (330 MB ESDI), not sure whether they're
related or not. Just in case, this is from Data General's doc that
accompanied the drive:

DA1-DA3:	ESDI ID. (default off-on-off, device address 2)

W1: off: hard sector mode
		on: soft sector mode

W2 W3 W4	SPT	unformatted bytes per sector
0 0 0 53	588
1 0 0 54	576
0 1 0 28	1116
1 1 0 14	2232
0 0 1 7	4464
1 0 1 - reserved -
0 1 1 97	321
1 1 1 1	31248	:-)

W5: off: spindle motor starts when power applied
on: spindle motor starts when Spindle command received
		    from controller

Hope this might be helpful.
