For compiling certain programs it was best to drop out of X and just compile the program. To have a smooth running system you may need 16MB of memory. I was forced to upgrade my system to 32MB because my girlfriend started running netscape on my system and running xv; so at times we had two netscape running plus xv or an image processing program.
