The most likely cause for your crummy performance is the lack of RAM. Running X on 8mb is painful regardless of the OS if you intend to get any real work done. Linux is actually pretty speedy for a desktop X workstation. In terms of stability, FreeBSD has been SIGNIFICANTLY more useful under high loads. There is also no comparison if you want to do antying requiring pushing lots of packets through the box. The networking code for FreeBSD is significantly more stable and a lot quicker. If you're not doing any hairy networking, popping in another 8mb would be the simplest way to boost performance. You'll notice a significant boost in percieved speed of the box.
