We have 150GB of storage backed up onto 20GB of tape, nightly. A typical day's backup uses about 5-7GB of our tapes, but it's been as high as 10GB when a large number of new disks have been added to the system. The package we use is called Amanda, by James da Silva (no relation) at UMD. It's totally transparent, and distributes the full backups over a backup set so you never exceed the capacities of any tape, promoting and delaying full backups as needed to maintain a balance. We have used this package on System V release 4.0, Solaris 2.3 and 2.4, SunOS 4.1.3, OSF/1, and BSDI. It's distributed as source with a completely open license... you can do pretty much anything you want as long as you don't claim it's yours or sue UMD if it doesn't work.
