But does it connect to the sound blaster, or what?  Is this an IDE CDROM drive?

If so, you can try grabbing
ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/incoming/wcd11.tgz

This is an experimental IDE CDROM driver for FreeBSD, and now part of
FreeBSD-current as well.
