Adaptec used to provide really good docs (152x/154x era) but they don't any longer. There is no documentation on how to program the AIC-77XX chips in their newer busmastering controllers, the 27xx, 28xx, and 29xx. This caused a delay in drivers and irked a lot of hardware hackers when the new boards became available.
