I had to make the root partition To clarify: EIDE is a superset of IDE, and probably refers to the way the disk can be accesses (DMA vs programmed IO). It has little (or probably nothing) to do with the size of the disk. Under FreeBSD, accesses to the (E)IDE disks use programmed I/O.
