Just a little bit curious, but Michael L. VanLoon, how many FreeBSD systems do you have experience with? Have you ever tried to connect a PCI controller to a drive? I thought you only had EISA experience. Now the NCR is a fine controller but there are a couple of drives that it is not happy with, and you really ought to not plant bombs here. Just because my only system at home is EISA-based doesn't mean I have no experience with other platforms. In fact, I have set up two different PCI systems. I have used the NCR card, and it worked just great. I have also heard enough reports on the BusLogic card to know it works adequately. And, finally, I have heard enough reports on Adaptec's policies, some of them recent, that I maintain my stand that I have no intention of ever supporting them with my money. Have I ever connected a PCI controller to a drive? Why, yes -- several. And, what does FreeBSD have to do with it? I thought NetBSD and FreeBSD used cousins of the same SCSI system. It hasn't diverged *that* much. Besides, I read your groups and see plenty reports of working systems. I have yet to see a report of a drive the NCR *just* *won't* work with. But, if you can prove there are such drives, I'll take your word for it. Do these also not work with the BusLogic card? Maybe more to the point, does NetBSD support the Quantum Grand Prix series? Or even more to the point, Microsoft? That's who is paying your wages these days, right? Does NetBSD support the Quantum Grand Prix? I really don't know. Is there something really special about that drive that would make NetBSD not work with it? (Keep in mind I don't write the SCSI code, and there is really no reason for me to know this unless I bought one.) My smaller, slower Quantum drives work fine on my BusLogic card. Does Microsoft work with the Grand Prix? Dunno. Microsoft is a company. Does Windows 95 work with it? Probably -- I wouldn't be surprised if it used it in PIO mode. Does Windows NT? Couldn't tell you -- but then again, why should I care? What does who pays my wages have to do with my post on recommended SCSI controllers for *BSD? Do you see "Microsoft" anywhere in my sig? The minute they have anything to say about what OS I run in my spare time (NetBSD) is the minute I find another employer. I stand by my post. Note that I did not recommend the NCR as the only solution -- I also recommended the BusLogic. You failed to address that in your post. -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Michael L.
