The last Linux distribution I installed was Slackware 2.0 and frankly I thought the file system was an absolute mess - practically every other file was a link, often to a file in a linked directory (if not to another link). By contrast, my FreeBSD system has precisely two links (AFAIK) - one the famous /etc/termcap, the other is one I put in from /usr/X11R6 to /usr/X11 to get Netscape to work (damn binary distributions!). To be fair, this was nearly a year ago, so the new standard should have improved things. Also, it's a criticism of distributions, rather than the kernel itself (which IMHO is a remarkable achievement). But I'm still very suspicious of the quality of Linux distributions, though.
