I have heard that Compaq themselves had to almost completely re-build one of their servers in order to run BSDI. If this is the case, it is due to the somewhat proprietory nature of Compaq components. The best that you will probably be able to accomplish is to use the Proliant as the basis for your server, and replace the proprietory components with industry standard equivalents - a Buslogic SCSI controller for example.
