In this case demon. Whereas DOS and WINDOWS type systems are well provided for and supported by, amongst others demon themselves, nobody seems to be able to tell me what packages to use and how to configure them to provide an equivalent service. This is a pain as I have come to the conclusion that all that I want is available quite readily from ftp servers all over, including demon, but nobody can provide me with a simple overview of what I need and how to bolt it together. I suspect that what I want to do has been done by many others since the easy availability of systems such as linux and freebsd to home users. So, all those out there who actually know what they are doing please take pity on a poor thick person who is quite good at standalone unix systems, even a bit of networking but is as thick as s**t where news is concerned. I also think that if someone was to write an idiot's guide to this and stuck it in with some of the packages on ftp sites then they would earn the undying thanks of the growing army of amateur UNIX people. So, the set up is: PC running FreeBSD 2.0 on a local network. Local network is called rissington.uk and the PC's name is alberich. This PC connects to demon using SLIP and is known to demon and the outside world as falstaf.demon.co.uk. Mail works fine and is delivered to users and users can send it. alberich/falstaf is the only host that has accounts that talk to the outside world. I want to connect to news.demon.co.uk down the SLIP line and read in a set of news articles defined by an active file. These would then be read, ideally by an X based news reader, by the users on falstaf. The users could then submit/post articles in reply and these would be sent to demon to send onwards. So, what do I need and how should it be set up?.
