I don't usually write "me too!" messages, but I have spent all day on the same
thing.  The X doco (/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/README.Config) suggests that in 99.999%
of cases it is because the OS is not properly configured.  

Hmmmn !  Yeah  !  Well,  I can't see how I have misconfigured it....
