I am building a 486 system to host 386BSD and am
trying to decide which graphics controller to get.
Cost is a concern, but I am willing to pay more if
the performance of a costlier board is significantly
better than a cheaper board.

I am thinking of getting either an S3 based board
or an ATI 8514/A capable board. Which of these will
give me the best X performance? Are there other
boards that will perform better that I am unaware of?

Which S3 based vendor is recommended for compatibiliy
with XFree86?

Which ATI board is recommended for X8514?
