Subject: EE16 ifconfig causes kernel page fault
Date: 12 Oct 1995 17:15:35 -0400

Keywords: Intel ether express 16 ethernet driver

I took an old 486DX2 PC which had an Intel Ethernet Express 16 board in it
and tried to install FreeBSD.
The interrupt on the EE16 has to be set to 5 to avoid a conflict with
other boards.
When I installed FreeBSD it did not see the EE16 since it assumes the
default interrupt is 10.
After installation I edited /sys/i386/GENERIC and changed the interrupt from
the default 10 to 5.
I rebuilt the kernel, installed it and test booted it.
I then made my best guess of what /etc/sysconfig should look like to make
the EE16 work and edited it by hand.
I must have guessed wrong since the system panics when it tries to run ifconfig.
I get a page fault while in kernel mode.

This is what I tried in /etc/sysconfig:

network_interfaces="ix0 lo0"
ifconfig_ix0="inet 3.19.228.93 netmask 0xfffffc00"
ifconfig_lo0="inet localhost"

Is this the correct format in /etc/sysconfig?
Are there known problems with the Intel Ether Express 16 driver?

Other than the EE16 problem it seems to be nominal.

Thanks in advance.

Remember this was after having to remove the offending ifconfig_ix0="inet 3.19.228.93 netmask 0xfffffc00"
Else I tool a page fault in kernel mode when running ifconfig.
