It sounds like you got the down level 1.0.1 distributions since the
kernel patches are easy to find for the 1.0.2a distribution.  1.0.2a is
a much
better organized distribution and the server bugs have been fixed.
Throw
1.0.1 away and get 1.0.2a from agate:/pub/incoming/X386.  You have to
'cd'
directly there since you do not have access to /pub/incoming itself.

FYI: The patches for 1.0.1 are hidden at the top of one of the diff files.
   It is not obvious and, as I remember, the filename implied patches to 
   either the server of X11R5 but not to the kernel.
