I just think something ] like ksmbfs would be a worthwhile addition to FreeBSD. I am ] not concerned about who would develop the feature. I think something like ksmbfs is worthwhile only for single user desktop machines, where a single client credential universally applied to all FS services consumers on the platform is an acceptable thing. For the most part, I think both Linux and FreeBSD do *not* fall into this definition. Therefore, I think that a ksmbfs would have to be significantly rearchitected along the lines of the NUC (NetWare UNIX Client) commercial server-client-as-file-system for it to be generally useful. Even on Linux. You are welcome to do that work, after which I will help you implement. Probably a full architecting and implementation would fall under my non-disclosure as a former Novell employee who has had his hands in the NUC code. I also advised on the Samba list when this was first discussed) (which means that I know what I am talking about when I condemn KSMBFS as a toy). You are also welcome to ignore my advice and implement the limited and therefore generally useless Linux KSMBFS code under BSD; it is significantly easier to add an FS to BSD in any case. Attempting to set this up as a "selling point" for Linux vs. BSD is not, however, welcome. Take it to the advocacy groups, please.
