I had this same problem and found it was releated to the fact that my
software setup (in /dev) was different than my hardware setup.  

In my situation my serial card was jumpered to skip com1 (ie: started
at com2) and the /dev/com1 was set up to look for com1 (like it should be).
Once I re-jumpered my serial card all was well.
