Yes  - you certainly can install BSDI 2.X on drives of >4GB - we do just that.

First I would check and confirm that your particular SCSI controller is 
supported - if it is a PCI for example, Buslogic is OK but Adaptec is not.  
The CMOS error is also somewhat strange, I would check the CMOS values for 
your system board and ensure that the setting is for NO fixed disk drive 
present - the BIOS of the SCSI controller takes care of capacities, 
mapping, etc..  If you have set your CMOS values to a drive capacity setting 
(usually only required for E/IDE drives) then that could well be the problem.
