Keywords: X386 Message-ID: <1992Sep19.165954.17800@fwi.uva.nl> Date: 19 Sep 92 16:59:54 GMT Sender: news@fwi.uva.nl Organization: FWI, University of Amsterdam Lines: 32 Nntp-Posting-Host: gene.fwi.uva.nl After ftp-ing the 1.0.2a X386 from agate.berkeley.edu (/pub/incoming/X386), I unpacked all the files as described, and started to install. The first problem was: the x386install script as mentioned in the README.386BSD file, was not present. So, did what the file was supposed to do by hand (created /dev/vga, changed /etc/ttys, made links, etc). I also applied the patches to init, and the kernel, and recompiled both. Here's the climax: when starting X (with 'startx'), the only thing I get is the startup message of the server (the few textlines it prints). It does not even go in to graphics mode, but simply reboots.. I fiddled around in the Xconfig file, but even at the safest assumptions about my videocard's capabilities (and my monitor's) still had the same result. It's not the problem that people had with the fontfiles, I did remove the Speedo entry (and would have got that error message anyway in that case). I also tried the GENERICISA kernel that comes with the X files, but the result was the same. It's not even a panic.. it's just a reboot. I'm pretty sure my video card is not at fault here (DV/X has been run on it, in 1024x1024 virtual screen mode). Is this a known bug in this version, that will be fixed in the (official) 1.0.3, or..?
