[Q why won't linux root file ops be validated by FreeBSD NFS
server when they would be by a "_Linux_" (his emph) server]

This is apparently because "_Linux_" is more lenient with
permissions on exported file systems. Check out the man
page on the exports file (man 5 exports). This will
tell you to add the "-maproot=root" option on the filesystems
that you want external root == internal root privledges.

With FreeBSD (and Solaris for that matter), you have to willingly
give up security on those filesystems, since, by default, external
root operations get mapped to the nobody (-1) UID.
