Thanks to Amancio for replying so quickly. It turned out I had given
/dev/vga the wrong major device number, it's running fine now.

Nice going, Frank, and this right in front of the whole networld.
Phew, I'm glad this is a text medium, I would not dare show my face
here otherwise. Oh, by the way, did I tell you that I am in fact just
using my friend's account ;)
