You are looking for PLP, which supports printer classes. It is an public domain version of the BSD lpd spooler system, with many enhancements ... I once installed a system with multiple printers, and used PLP and some Perl scripts to assign queues (with one queue per supported paper format, and if multiple printers had the same paper loaded, they would share the load ...)
