I used to have that SONY CD-ROM drive, it is not the same as the SONY
driver that's in the kernel...  Unfortunately...  Under LINUX, even though 
there was a SONY driver in there, I had to patch in a Sony 535 driver
I got off the net up until 1.1.91 (or some such number)...

I've since ditched the old CD-ROM drive in favor of looking forward to 
someday getting a better one...

You can still install from that CD-ROM, it just involves copying the 
files you need to your DOS filesystem, (under DOS of course) and doing
an install from DOS filesystem, or even copying it all to floppies and 
doing install from floppies (I know someone with an unsupported CD-ROM drive
who did this)

Another possibility would be to borrow a better CD-ROM drive long enough to 
install everything...  :)
